Salvation Army Qinghai Earthquake Relief Update

A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu in Qinghai Province on 14^th April (Wednesday). The Salvation Army transported the first batch of relief supplies including two tonnes of barley flour, 200 sets of warm clothes and medicines, to Yushu on Tuesday (20^th April). It is expected that the needed materials will be distributed to the survivors within two days.

　

To show respect to Tibetan customs, The Salvation Army particularly purchased barley flour for the survivors. As the weather in the highlands is extremely cold, The Army will also provided folded beds to the survivors who currently stay in tents but sleep on the ground. The first batch of 6,000 folded beds will be delivered to the affected people within this week. The Salvation Army has applied for the HK government’s Disaster Relief Fund to purchase an additional 40,000 folded beds to help the survivors ride out the chilly weather.

　

Salvation Army Qinghai relief service has received tremendous support from the people of Hong Kong. Nine shopping centres under Sun Hung Kai Real Estate Agency, The Hong Kong Association for Democracy and People’s Livelihood, The Incorporated Owners of Hung Hom Commercial Centre and the District Councilor Offices of Ms Chan Man-kuen, Mr Wong Ka-wing, Mr. Law Kwong-keung, Mr. Yiu Ka-chun, Mr. Pun Kwok-shan and Mr. Ho Hau-cheung, help The Salvation Army to raise fund for the survivors of Qinghai earthquake.

　

As of today, 21^st April 2010, The Salvation Army raised about HK$3.3 million in Hong Kong.
