Qinghai Earthquake Relief Update

On April 14, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu in Qinghai Province. The epicenter of the quake was near to Jiegu township, the location of the Yushu prefecture government. Most of the houses in Jiegu have collapsed. The quake killed at least 500 people and left more than 10,000 injured.

　

The Salvation Army personnel in Beijing will hurry to Xining, provincial capital of Qinghai Province tomorrow (16^th April, 2010). The team will contact with The Qinghai Provincial Department of Civil Affairs to mobilise its emergency services. According to the Civil Affairs Department, China National Highway 214, the road linking Jiegu to the outside was damaged. The prefecture government blocked this highway and gave priority to the government rescue units. Relief teams of agencies are not encouraged to enter the quake-hit region.

　

Yushu County is a remote area with limited resources. Food and water supplies are urgently needed. The Salvation Army is now working with The Qinghai Provincial Department of Civil Affairs and preparing to deliver basic necessities such as food, water and clothes to the survivors in no time.

　

Yushu County, where the elevation is around 4,300 meters above sea level, is located in south of Qinghai Province and is some 800 km away from Xining.

　

The Salvation Army is committed to providing emergency assistance to the survivors. The Army will work with the Mainland relief authority to help the victims ride out this devastation.
