14th April, 2010 (Wednesday) The Salvation Army Launches Appeal for Qinghai Earthquake Relief At 7:49pm, April 14, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu in Qinghai Province. The epicenter of the quake was near to Jiegu Town where has a population of 100,000. Most of the homes in Jiegu have collapsed and the local temperature was -1.2¢J. It is expected that the death toll will be significantly increase in the following days. ¡@ The Salvation Army has contacted with the local rescue agencies to immediately mobilise its emergency services. The Salvation Army personnel in Mainland China and Hong Kong will hurry to the affected area to deliver food. Other emergency supplies such as clothes and hygiene products will be transported to Jiegu later when emergency crew assesses the damage and prioritises immediate needs. ¡@ Yushu County, where the elevation is around 4,300 meters above sea level, is located in south of Qinghai Province and is some 800 km away from Xining. ¡@ The Salvation Army is committed to providing emergency assistance to the survivors.
