The Salvation Army Provides Assistance to China Drought Victims

Since last autumn, the southwest of China including four provinces, Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou and Yunnan, and Chongqing municipality, have been hit by severe drought. Yunnan province, most of the area in Guizhou and some areas in Guangxi have had no rain for more than five months. The drought has left at least 60 million people and 11 million heads of livestock short of drinking water, and an extensive area of cropland unproductive.

　

The village people living in the rural and semi-rural areas are the most vulnerable groups of this once-in-a-century drought. It is expected that the drought will continue in Yunnan, the affected population will increase from 7 million to 10 million by May.

　

The Salvation Army Hong Kong and Macau Command sent a relief team to the remote area in Yunnan to conduct assessment. Emergency supplies, including drinking water and grain will be provided to more than 120,000 affected people in Shi Zong County (師宗縣).

　

Lieut-Colonel Samuel Pho, Officer Commanding of The Salvation Army Hong Kong and Macau Command, says that the villagers every day are living for the water, they don’t even remember the last time they had a bath. Lieut-Colonel Pho sincerely hopes that the people of Hong Kong would extend their helping hand to our compatriots again and support The Salvation Army to help the people who are suffering from a lack of water.
