The Salvation Army Recycling Programme Since the 60s The Salvation Army has been collecting used clothes from the public. On the one hand we advocate the public to treasure our resources and make the best use of them, on the other hand, the gift-in-kinds received will be partly distributed to needy people e.g. home alone elderly, street sleepers, ex-prisoners and CSSA recipients (over 10,000 beneficiaries last year), and partly sold in discounted price through our retail chain of 17 Family Stores. The net proceed will be designated to support those social services which are not funded by the Government or the community development projects in less privileged area of mainland China. This programme is well received by the public at large and the Government. Last year we have collaborated with over 300 corporations and units for recycling campaign. Over 200 collection boxes are placed across Hong Kong to collect donations items. We are also one of the Scheme Managers of the "Community Used Clothes Recycling Bank Scheme" of the Home Affairs Department of the Government. The total amount of items collected was more than 2,800 tones in 2010.
